The Best of Tom Petty

I'm a bit of a Tom Petty expert...

My first song that my parents sang to me was not "The Itsy Bitsy Spider" or "Old McDonald Had A Farm." Instead, while I was still in the hospital, only hours old, my dad started singing Tom Petty songs to me. He tells me he sang "Learnin' To Fly" in the hospital but he's mixing my brother and I up because that song was released in 1991 and I was born in 1990. Instead he used to sing songs like "Breakdown" and "Don't Do Me Like That." I highly doubt that he knew that Tom Petty would still be my favorite artist at the age of 18. While all the other girls in my class were obsessed with The Spice Girls I was singing "Into The Great Wide Open." So by popular demand, here is what I consider the best Tom Petty songs. Some of them are popular, some aren't. *** those that aren't known well may not have videos along to accompany them.

Breakdown

Learnin' To Fly

Listen To her Heart

Did you know?

When writing "Listen to her heart" the production company wanted to change the lyrics to "You think you're gonna take her away with your money and your champagne." They were afraid that if they allowed the use of the word "cocaine" on the radio it would promote drug use and hold them liable.

Mary Jane's Last Dance

The Waiting

Free Fallin'

Fun Fact

During the 2008 Super Bowl Half Time Show I got exactly 37 text messages all from different people making sure I knew that Tom Petty was the performer and to turn on the TV... of course I already had it on!

Into The Great Wide Open

I Won't Back Down

Refugee

American Girl

Runnin' Down a Dream

King's Highway

Don't Do Me Like That

Did you know?

The song "Don't do me like that" was originally written and recorded by Tom Petty's first band, Mudcrutch. When he later decided to record it with The Heartbreakers he made some minor changes.

use the video tool and get the video off of youtube or google or something (it tells you what it accepts) just put the url in and presto... you have yourself an amazing array of tom petty videos.

Listen To Her Heart is the song that calms my horse down the most. For non-animal people that sounds silly but he is a Tom Petty lover and I've played all sorts of music for him but he has good taste. So whenever he gets really anxious I just sing that song to him. I didn't have room to put a fun fact and a did you know on that one though.

I was really disappointed I couldn't find some songs. I couldn't find any from Highway Companion which really blows. I love Saving Grace. There's another song that I LOVE it's called Alright For Now but it's so not well known I wasn't expecting to find it.

Yeeeeessss, great work, now I can open up two screens and listen. Being from LA, Free Fallin is my favorite song, something about Riding down Ventura blvd. You got some good taste. And don't listen to Tony, he's from San Diego.

I'm honestly not too much of a fan of Don't Come Round Here No More. I can sing the entire song, but I like all Tom Petty songs... just not one of the best.
