What types of dogs make the best pets?

Dogs are considered man's best friend. However, some dogs do make better pets than others. Some problems lie with aggressive nature and some lie with just too much energy and a need to run around.  Here are the best dog breeds for families.

The Beagle

The beagle is a great dog for many families. They are hound dogs that make great hunting dogs and are incredibly smart however sometimes they can be quite stubborn and come across as "dumb." In my experience, I have never met a person that a beagle that a family didn't love. The animal shelter I work at has beagles adopted every few days. We know that if we get a beagle in, it will get a home soon. They are quite sweet on the whole and as long as you can stand the occasional hound dog bark, they make the perfect family pet. The beagle enjoys company and because of this, they make poor watch dogs. One of the reasons that beagles are so popular with families is that they are great with children and can tolerate the tail-pulling and crying that children put into an environment.

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is one of the largest toy dogs with one of the best personalities. Cavaliers are extremely social dogs that love the company of other dogs and people which can mean that if you are not around all the time, you may need to have a companion for your Cavalier. The Cavaliers are generally patient and eager to please which make them great dogs for children. Cavaliers will adapt to just about any environment. I have a great friend that always has had Cavaliers and they are the sweetest dogs you can find. They like to be on your lap all the time and they are silly which never fails to put a smile on my face.

The Poodle

The poodle is known as somewhat well-known more as a show dog than a house dog, however, poodles make great pets for families. Unlike other dogs that are good for families, poodles tend to love everyone in the family instead of latching onto one person as their favorite person. Poodles are very good with children as they are playful and energetic. However, because they are so energetic, they need a lot of exercise or they can get up to some mischief. Their mischief is quite wise as they are very smart dogs. Poodles are easy to train which is one less thing to worry about when you have kids!

The Basset Hound

The basset hound was bred to hunt. However, the basset hound is a people-pleaser and gets along with almost all children. Because basset hounds are seen as such a friendly breed, it is best that they are kept on a leash when on walks so they do not follow other people or prey. The basset hound has an innate fear of stairs. Basset hounds love to have people around them and in my experience, love nothing better than to have their bellies rubbed.

We own A English Cocker and An American Cocker they are the most loveable and enjoyable little dog, I don't know much about the Beagle as my cousin had one that loved to bark. :)

dana825 You forgot the Labrador? - they are really family oriented and so good with everyone - we have one and he is just brilliant and so gentle also...I certainly agree with you comment about poodles being so smart - I grew up with poodles (standard and toy) and they are highly intelligent - thanks for this hub...cheers

I actually didn't forget the lab. I know that for people with kids having a lab is like having another baby for the first six years of its life. They can be hard to train because they are high strung, they need a lot of exercise, and I would not recommend a lab to anyone without a big yard and the the determination to train it consistently. Labs take more work that the dogs that I listed above and it is for that reason I would not like to give a lab to a family.

I agree dana825 they do need training and a big yard as indeed most dogs do, but having said that they are not hard to train and having had three over the course of my life I have found they take about two years to learn not chew up the hose, bathplugs, to sit and stay etc., Also none of mine were highly strung, but I did go to listed breeders & pay a lot for my labs so maybe that could be a reason for their really good, even temperaments. Gorgeous animals. I also found they are/were great with children, my children in particular...but as this is your hub I will desist.... my worst and naughtiest dog however was a dalmatian... cheers

I have to agree with you on the Lab as my friend has 3 and although they are beautiful dogs, they are completely out of control, they have eaten her furniture, her staircase, her bed, tor the blinds down and the one male all he does is bark and when you go to her house, all they do is jump. I honestly have to say she does not have them under control and refuses to discipline so they are the worse Labs I have ever seen all due to no discipline. :::::::::::::(

I got a labrador his name is buster if you met him you would fall in love with him infact we have a ginger cat to her name is Kayla and they get on together really really well i love having them around labradors and golden retrievers are pretty hard to train this is because they are high strung and they need alot of excercise so you would need a big yard if you have a small yard i would go for a foxi or a cavalier king charles spaniel i had one of them two years ago and im telling yah yeh there are beauty

Terriers are very energetic as a group, short concentration, and can be rather yappy, in my opinion. I have found a lot of terrier mixes that I have adored, but you really just have to look for the dog that fits you best.

Michelle, it's funny you bring up pitbulls because I have been working at a humane society and have met so many pits in need of homes and have found that they have just earned a bad rep. It really depends on how they are raised. However, with any bully breed (boxers, pit bulls, bull dogs) it's important to know that they CAN be provoked... just like any other dog... but they tend to be much stronger.
